Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is the name given to the process of making a website appear on the first page of results in search engine queries. SEO is often associated with achieving first page results on Google, the dominant, i.e., most popular, search engine. So, SEO is about helping Google better understand and rank the content of your site or blog.
There are two types of SEO: on-page and off-page SEO.
On-page SEO means good web design that consists of accessible and efficient code. When writing the HTML code for your site, make sure to include proper titles and H1, H2 headers for all your pages. Also, target long-tail keywords which have less competition and are better targeted. Researching keywords is a huge topic but there exist many free tools, i.e., Overture, for discovering these valuable keywords.
Off-page SEO focuses on link building. That is getting other webmasters to link to your site with the right keywords in the anchor text. The source for the need to link is none other than Google's PageRank algorithm. PageRank measures the popularity of a site over all sites on the Internet. The more links a site receives the higher the PR it has and the higher in the search engine ranking it appears. The trick to getting a high PR is to receive links from other sites that have the same topic as yours. Those more relevant links have higher weight and are likely to help you rank better in the search engine result pages (SERPS.)
SEO is something that you have to do often. New and interesting content that is linked by other sites will bring lots of targeted visitors from search engines. And did I mention that this traffic is free? Learn how to do SEO well and you will never go broke online.
