You've got your new site up and you're ready to get it optimized for search engines. Where should you start?   1. Omitting the Title, Description and Keyword Meta tags. I've seen it first hand many times - potential clients contact me interested in a re-design because their site has been up for over a year and they have no traffic or page rank. I check their source code and sure enough, they don't have any tags. If you go to Google Webmaster Help Center, you'll see they encourage you to have title tags.
  2. Leaving "Under Construction" on your pages. You want your site to be seen as something that is evolving and continually changing so people will come back? Don't put up "under construction" or "continually under construction". The search engines will ignore you.
  3. No Links! This is a must for your website, you need to have them. Link to relevant sites from your site and have some incoming links from relevant sites too.
  4. Keyword stuffing. Cramming your pages full of keywords is going to shoot you down in the SERPs. You need to do research on keyword density and keep your pages within those ranges.
  5. Hiring a dishonest SEO service. You get what you pay for. If you want to have legitimate results, hire an expert service and expect to pay anywhere from 2-5 k per month. Do your research and make sure to check references by speaking to the former clients personally over the phone. If you hire a service that "guarantees" top placement, you are most likely getting ripped off.
  6. Using important text in images. The robots and spiders don't recognize the text in an image. If you have something important you want shown on your page, use text!
  7. Dead links. Make sure you check your links frequently. If your links aren't live, guess what? The crawler is leaving your site - dead end.

How to Get a PR6 Backlink

One of the major factors of Google's algorithm for calculating Page Rank(PR) and top SERPs (search engine result pages) is getting quality inbound links from authority web sites. Although the visible PR (on the Google Search bar) is historical (could be up to 4 months old) it is an indicator of that site's importance in Google's eyes.

Google PR uses a scale of 0 to 10 - there is a grey rank for dubious sites! A page rank of 10 is in your dreams! So 0 is the lowest and 10 is the highest. The scale is logarithmic - so getting a ranking of 2 is not twice as hard as getting 1 but significantly higher!!

So your aim is to get inbound links from sites with high PR. Of course, the higher a site's PR the harder it is to get a link. But not always - more about that later!!

Relevancy of Link

The next issue is relevancy! If your site is about Perfumes, there is not much point in getting a link from a site about Washing Machines. If you get those type of inbound links, Google will smell a rat (sorry for the pun). Instead you should be looking for a site which is on the theme of Perfumes. Good PR links from such sites will do your rankings a power of good.

Keyword

And there is more: choice of keyword for the outbound link. You have managed to find a site with good PR on perfumes and they are happy to exchange links. Carefully choose a page which has content about the keyword (or phrase) you wish to promote, and then ask for the anchor text to be the that keyword (phrase). Next - what page should you be linking to on your site? You MUST have a page where the content revolves around the keyword you are promoting - ideally in the title, H1 and text content. So linking to this page makes sense to Google. Google is looking for natural hyperlinks which lead to pages that are on topic! Google will give you brownie points as a result.

One final point make sure the webmaster you are exchanging content links with does not use the "nofollow" attribute on his external links. Links with the "nofollow" link will not pass Google PR to your site.

Yes, your site can rank at the top of the search engines without having to spend a ton of money on AdWords or other paid search results. If you take the time to understand what the search engines are looking for, even to the point of putting yourself in their shoes you can optimize your site to rank at the top of the organic or natural results.

Sound too good to be true? Not at all. Using the techniques outlined below a great many of the sites in the top 10 have done just that.

Step 1 - Determine your Keyword Phrases

You may have heard of keywords but have you heard of keyword phrases? Search users today are narrowing their search results by entering more than a single or couple of words to search. More and more search users are entering in search phrases that contain 3, 4 or more keywords. Yes, you should have your keywords, but what has become more important are the keyword phrases that search users are more likely to enter.

Know your keyword phrases for your product or service. Know what your visitors are going to be looking for beyond a single keyword. The purpose of this exercise to identify the visitor you are looking for, want to attract or who would want your product or service. If you are selling golf shirts then you would want to narrow the search results down in this manner:

Golf
Golf shirts
Nike golf shirts
Nike golf shirts large

If you are selling Nike golf shirts you would probably want to rank well for the last 2 keyword phrases and you wouldn't care how you ranked for the single keyword "Golf". Your site would be mixed in with millions of other sites that had nothing to do with golf shirts.

Remember who you are trying to attract. You want the visitor who is looking to buy a golf shirt. Optimizing your pages to reflect your desires will help in obtaining the results you want.

Step 2 - Use you Keyword Phrase

Each page on your site must be different and unique. Duplicate content is seen as a bad thing by search engines. However, in order to rank well your keyword phrase must meet certain criteria and be displayed in key points on the pages of your site.

The keyword phrase for the specific page you are on should be the first thing in the page title. At the very top of every page on the web there is a page title. The first thing in this page title should be your keyword.

You should also have the keyword phrase as the title for the first section in the body of the page as well as scattered throughout the text. Look for a saturation point of 2% but not more than 3%.

You should also consider having the keyword phrase in the footer of the page. This will give the accurate impression that your total page is devoted to this keyword phrase.

By carefully duplicating this technique without duplication you can create a fully optimized website for your keyword phrase.

Step 3 - Use Google Webmaster Tools to Rank Higher

Google for years has been the leader in search use. More people use their search engine than any other. The relevant results that they give along with the speed in which they display the results catapulted them to the top of the search engine heap years ago. Knowing this it just makes sense to latch onto their coattails and ride along with them.

Google has provided a set of tools for webmasters that helps them better understand your site. Through these tools Google will see your site faster, crawl the pages more often and better understand what type of visitor that you are trying to attract. Embracing these tools will enhance the speed at which your site is ranked.

Google Analytics is a free reporting tool. It contains some incredible data about your site and the visitors you are attracting.
Google Webmaster Tools. After registering and verifying your site you will be able to submit a sitemap for your site. This will help tremendously in assuring that all of your pages are seen by Google.
Google Base. If you are an E-commerce site this is an incredible tool to get your product in front of potential buyers.
Live Product Feed. This is the equivalent product feed for MSN.

Really I could stop there and you would have some great and useable information. But there is this little thing about minimum word count, so I'll explain that statement a bit more.

Here is why this statement is so important and powerful. Most people that begin in article writing and article marketing will write one or maybe even a few articles, wait for all the wonderful results that do not come right away, and then claim that article marketing does not work.

Article marketing works. Some people do not work, however.

The bare minimum number of articles on the internet that you need to just begin to see a steady trickle of traffic is 25. Everything after 25 articles increases the trickle.

If you are serious about article marketing, life really begins at 250 articles. If this article is accepted, it will give me 1017 articles on just one article directory. I could not stop the flood of daily traffic if I wanted to, and I sure don't want to.

Keyword Discovery or Keyphrase Research is the initial step in the success of any website. Internet searchers use this step to find what they want. If your website uses such key elements in a proper way, they could lead you to a successful online business. If not, your site needs a serious reconsideration.

Importance of Keyword Research in Web Development

The choice of keywords is so important that experts recommend web developers to consider keyword discovery search as the first step in their works. That is to say, even before choosing a name for your website, you need to know what your keywords will be.

After such a research, web developers can proceed to choose a name for their site. Texts, links, web design, meta data, all tags, comments and whatever in which words play some part will be done afterward based on the initial step.

Which Keywords OR Keyphrases to Choose?

You should do some keyword discovery or keyphrase research to learn what people type while thinking about your information, product or service. Then, get the historical volume of a keyword that is searched and see how competitive it is.

Of course, if a key string of words is searched a lot, it wouldn't mean that it's the best one for you. Actually, the competition for such a term will be way high too.

So, what's the solution? You should choose the most effective one. Divide the popularity of a keyword (the number of searches for it) by its competitiveness (the number of results) and you'll have the Keyword Effectiveness Index (KEI) of that keyword.

The higher the result, the better that string of words will be to choose and use.

How Many Keywords / Keyphrases Do You Need?

When you begin your keyword discovery, you should make a list of words and phrases. The most effective ones, one to three of them, will be your main keywords or keyphrases used at your main page, usually home page. The total number of keywords for your website will depend on the size of your whole site, the content of each individual page, etc.

Generally, the number of key words for each page should be from 3 to 10. However, it's usually recommended not to begin your new page or main page of the new site with more than 3 keyphrases.

Keywords vs Keyphrases?

While searching, if you use a single word, you are searching for general information, product or service which is usually a brand name these days. The longer the string of words in such a cluster, the more specific such a phrase is. Success is in selecting your best keyphrases, not keywords.

An example:

You run a foodstuff recipe website and now want to be found for a particular salad for a special event, Easter. Let's say you use Google for this search. Would you use "salad" as your main keyword? I guess not, because you know that this term could bring you around 40 millions of results. It means a lot of competition.

What about "Easter salad"? it definitely lowers the degree of competition for you as there will be around 1.2 million results. Great difference, isn't it? This, by itself, shows how different it is to add one more word to the search term. To narrow the search, I even recommend to use one more word to the string. It will be "Easter salad recipes".

Maybe the difference in results won't be very different from "Easter salad", but when Internet searchers use this last string of words (a keyphrase), they are more specific about what they need.

Important:
If you write rich content on "salad recipes for Easter" and optimize a webpage for it, you will most probably be seen on the first page of the results.

How to Use Keywords or Keyphrase in Writing?

First things first. Your attitude is the most important thing. Write for your webpage visitors. Give them exactly the information related to the keyphrase you're using. Then, at second stage consider the search engine and their rules.

Obviously, now that you've done key phrase research, you're supposed to make use of the result, in our example, "Easter salad recipes". Use it at your title, body text, meta data, alt tags, etc in a natural way. Again, while doing this, avoid stuffing your page with this key phrase. Keep the keyword frequency, weight, etc in its appropriate proportion.

Don't forget to use some synonymous terms. Google considers synonyms used at the same page by its algorithm. Of course, this doesn't mean that you should sacrifice your keyphrase research by providing a large number of synonymous words or phrases for it. Just consider it a few times.

How to Create Successful Web Pages?

Considering the initial step suggested above to discover the best terms, the right way to create successful web pages could be as follows:

1. Launch a thorough keyword discovery or keyphrase research.

2. Apply web copy writing techniques to create rich content for your pages.

3. Finally, optimize your web page to make sure your discovery or research hasn't been done in vain.

Eventually, you'll have one such a good web page. Do the same for all other pages of your site and you'll see the result overtime.
